PDF to Text — frequently asked questions
Does this work on scanned PDFs?
No. A scan is a picture of text with no text layer to read, so this tool will return little or nothing. You'd need OCR, which this tool doesn't do — convert the pages to images with PDF to JPG and run them through an OCR tool instead.
Will the layout of tables be preserved?
Partly. Text comes out in reading order with line breaks, but multi-column layouts and table cells lose their grid, because a PDF stores positioned text rather than a table structure.
Can I extract text from a password-protected PDF?
Unlock it first with the Unlock PDF tool — that also runs entirely on your device — then extract from the unlocked copy.
Do my PDFs get uploaded to a server?
